Must Have Gear for Outdoor Adventures in Minnesota
This blog was written for Roseau, MN, but the same packing guidelines apply for other northern cities.

Roseau is the birthplace of the Polaris Snowmobile developed in 1954
Winter in Roseau, MN, is the real deal—cold, crisp, and absolutely stunning. If you’re planning a weekend of outdoor fun here, you’ll want to be prepared for the elements while still enjoying everything this Northwoods destination has to offer. Whether you’re snowmobiling, ice fishing, or just exploring the beauty of the area, here’s what you should pack to stay warm and make the most of your trip.
What to Pack for a Winter Weekend Outdoors in Roseau, MN
Dress for the Outdoors
Layers are key in a northern Minnesota winter. The temperatures can drop well below zero, but if you dress right, you’ll stay warm and comfortable.
- Â Base Layer: A moisture-wicking thermal shirt and leggings to keep sweat away from your skin.
- Â Mid Layer: A fleece or wool sweater and insulated pants for warmth.
- Â Outer Layer: A heavy, insulated winter coat (preferably waterproof) and snow pants to block the wind and snow.
- Â Hat and Gloves: A thick knit or fleece-lined hat and insulated gloves or mittens (mittens tend to be warmer!). Consider bringing glove liners for extra protection.
- Â Neck Gaiter or Scarf: Essential for keeping the wind and snow off your face.
- Â Wool Socks: Bring a couple of pairs to keep your feet warm and dry. The more wool the better.Â
- Â Winter Boots: Insulated, waterproof boots with good traction for walking on ice and snow. metal grips can be strapped on any boot . We like Yaktrax Traction Cleats.Â

Outdoor Gear for Winter Adventurers
Depending on what you have planned, here are some must-haves:
-  Snowmobile Gear: If you’re hitting the trails, a full snowmobile suit, helmet, and heated gloves are great additions. Stop by Polaris Experience Center for a free tour and grab a Polaris sweatshirt as a souvenir.Â
- Snowmobiles can be driven within the city limits of Roseau. Here is a map of designated roads and trails.  Open this link: https://www.city.roseau.mn.us/vertical/sites/%7B8FB1D8F3-5043-4518-90E7-60C266949462%7D/uploads/ATV_trails.PDF
-  Ice Fishing Equipment: If you’re coming to fish, pack a portable fish house or rent a day house from a full service resort on Lake of the Woods. Don’t forget a good ice auger, fishing rods, and bait. Portable heaters will also make a big difference out on the ice. The closest lake access points from Roseau is Warroad Public Landing and Springsteel Resort. Both are about a 25-minute drive from downtown Roseau.
-  Cross-Country Ski or Snowshoe Gear: Roseau has excellent trails for both activities, so bring your skis or snowshoes. If you don’t have your own, check with Riverview Outdoors for rentals. The City of Roseau maintains ski trails around our golf course and parks or Hayes Lake State Park is another great more remote place to ski or snowshoe. Trails in the state park are open but not groomed.
