If your dog needs a vacation as much as you do, bring them along on your next visit to Roseau. Whether strolling the many trails of Hayes Lake State Park or the wooded Beltrami Forest, picnics at the Gazebo, camping in the City Park, or exploring vast networks of ATV trails there’s plenty to keep you and your pup happily adventuring together through this pet-friendly community Roseau is a pet-friendly community and offers many activities for you to share together and options for boarding on those days when having a pet on vacation is not the right fit. Without further a-do, here’s a pup-sized sampling of things to do and places to go that are pet friendly in Roseau.

Camping- Ruffing It’

If you’re looking to ruff it with your pup, finding a campsite is fairly easy in Roseau. Whether you choose to camp in an RV, pop-up camper, Airstream or tent, you and your dog will find plenty of space to spread out.

The City of Roseau Campground is a great, pet and family-friendly summer spot just minutes from downtown Roseau. They understand that your pets are important members of your family, and welcome all well-mannered dogs to stay. They do require guests to keep them on leashes and clean up after them. Dogs will love the riverfront park or cooling off under the tall oaks, and human guests can rent paddle boats, paddleboards, and canoes from Riverview Outdoors and Rec. Paddling with a water-trained dog is easy on the Roseau River thanks to its sit-down kayak and canoe launch. After a long day of playing outside or in the river, use the pet washing station at Tractor Supply Store or The Pet Pantry to clean off

Tips for Camping and Hiking With Your Dog

Before you and spot jump in the car for your Roseau road trip and start exploring the town, a few woofs to the wise:

  • Keep your pup on a leash at all times.  When passing other hikers, have your dog sit or shorten their leash.  We love dogs but not everyone does.
  • Make sure your campsite, hiking trails and surroundings are left cleaner than when you arrived (no pile left behind), and don’t let your pooch disturb other campers. Consider making friends with the neighbors and introducing them to your four-legged friend.
  • When hiking around the grounds and nearby parks, obey the signs and stay on dog-friendly trails.
  • Pack plenty of freshwater for you and your dog—when you’re thirsty, your dog probably is, too. It’s best not to allow them to drink pond and lake water.
  • While sharing your weenie roast with Fido is part of the fun of camping, keep him out of the s’mores stash.
  • Roseau has many wide-open spaces to play ball but remember that there are new smells that can lead to wandering and one of those smells might be a skunk.

Pet Friending Hotel Lodging

The Roseau AmericInn allows pets to stay with their owners at their newly renovated hotel. The one-time fee of $25 gets your pets access to sleeping next to your bed. Your pet will like the green space around the hotel and the City of Roseau has many walking trails and side streets to smell the fresh northern air. The AmericInn also has plenty of parking for you to bring, boats, ATVs, and trailers.

ATV Riding and Water Activities with Pets

Travel safely no matter how you’re traveling with your pet to guarantee everyone in the family has a tail-wagging good time.  Check into carriers, harnesses, and leash options in advance.  It’s always a good idea to practice whatever setup you decide to go with before your vacation. Get your dog used to the rig, the harness, or life preserver before the big outing. One way to try to get them comfortable with it can be to put their bed or a blanket with their scent on it into the off road vehicle, boat, or carrier. You can use this same technique to make your pup feel more ‘at home’ in a tent or hotel at night by bringing along his bed. Dogs love to explore but remember it will be easier on you both if you know what to expect along the way.
