The small town of Roseau, perched at the top of the state known as the Land of 10,000 Lakes, buzzed with excitement as Groundhog’s Day approached. Will it be an early spring or will winter hold on for eight more weeks?   Roman, standing merely a foot tall, became the talk of the town. Roman enjoyed the local shops and the welcoming atmosphere of Mainstreet. With a snicker, Roman told the local newspaper reporter, ” I like to shop small.” With his custom embroidered wool Roseau hat and his Sorrel boots from Annies Trading Post, he was ready to take on the responsibility of predicting an early spring.

On the eve of Groundhog’s Day, the townsfolk gathered at an outdoor hockey rink, their breath visible in the chilly air. Roman emerged from his cozy gnome hole, perched atop an ice clump, and declared, “Fear not, dear friends! I have traveled the world far and wide and I have learned the skill of accurate weather prediction.  I’m  here to reveal the secrets of spring!”

The crowd held its collective breath as Roman produced a tiny pair of spectacles and peered into his miniature crystal ball. After what felt like an eternity, Roman dramatically announced, “Behold, the shadows have spoken! Spring is on the horizon!”
